Warmest greetings and congratulations to the awardees, nominees, and the organizers of the Sustainable Income for People in Agrarian Grassroots (SIPAG) Awards 2007.
Of the 810, 362 registered business establishments in the country, 99 percent are small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and 743,628 businesses, or 91.75 percent, are microenterprises. It is, therefore, proper to say that however small an enterprise is, the impact it has on the country is huge.
We have enacted several laws to empower the microentrepreneurial spirit of the Filipino people. One of them, Republic Act No. 9178, or the Barangay Micro Business Enterprise (BMBE) Act of 2002, gives microentrepreneurs access to capital funds to start their own business ventures.
But this is not the government's responsibility alone, I call on every branch of the government and the public to support the private sector and our microentrepreneurs by patronizing their products, by providing assistance through financial and technical assistance.
I commend the National Livelihood Support Fund
for continuing the fight against poverty and promoting microentrepreneurship among the Filipino people.
