FEP Agro-enterprise Facilitators’ Training

2013 Series, Session 2

  The Session 2 of FARMER ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM (FEP) Training Series 2013-2014 was held in Rajah Park Hotel, Cebu City, last October 22-24, 2013 and was attended by 29 stakeholders from the Local Government Unit (LGU), Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) and the Academe, comprising the different Site Working Groups of the six (6) new project sites in Visayas and Mindanao. 
The three-day session, a continuation to the participants’ journey to the eight-step clustering approach, gave participants a chance to visit markets to enhance their knowledge of Step 3 (Market Chain Study) and present business objectives that will be pursued by farmer clusters in Step 4 (Cluster Commitment Setting). In the end, the participants were assigned tasks based on the results of the Steps mentioned and reflected in their action plan/field coaching schedules.
 
Result of Coaching/Output
 
Mr. Dominador Mariano of Catholic Relief Services facilitated the discussion on the challenges that SWG members encountered during the implementation of different activities of FEP. The Activity has also serves as a venue for the SWG members to review their current practices in implementing the FEP and identifying what they exactly need to strengthen and maximize. Mr. Mariano encouraged everyone to strengthen the different opportunities/drivers for the smooth implementation of FEP.
 
Knowing the Market

Mr. Dominador Mariano also discussed the importance of knowing the market. He presented different kinds of markets and mentioned the types of markets they can sell their product to, like institutional markets, wet markets, supermarkets or export market. He also emphasized the role of the SWG members in discovering markets and in conducting market validation.
 
Tips in Conducting a Buyer’s Interview
In preparation for the market visit on the session’s 2nd day, Mr. Mariano provided the some tips in conducting a buyer’s interview. Buyer’s interview is important as it helps farmers in knowing the product demand, the different buying conditions and other opportunities for the farmers. Also, he gave tips for prior, during and after a buyer’s interview.
 
Making a Business Objective

Ms. Joan Cua-Uy of Catholic Relief Services discussed the key steps in creating a business objective. During the discussion, she emphasized the importance of production module and cluster supply plan from Step 2. She also mentioned the importance of studying markets and conducting a buyers’ interview in creating a business objective for collective marketing.
   
A Functional Cluster Organization (Leadership Structure, Policies and Agreements, Facilitating Farmers’ Commitment to the Business Objective)
Mr. Darwin Valenciano’s (IDD-NLDC) discussion on the definition of functional cluster organization and what it is all about capped of the 3-day FEP Session. His discussion placed emphasis on the importance of getting the commitment of each cluster members.
The 3rd FEP Session will be held in Hotel Elizabeth, Cebu City, on November 26 to 28, 2013.
